X mm from Y km, dir. Gianina Cărbunariu 12.03, 19 p.m.
Gianina Cărbunariu – director and playwright. She was born in 1977, studied Romanian litterature and directing at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Stipendist in Viesbaden, London, Valencia. In 2000 she won a prize for the essay entitled Irreality of the Immediate Wild East in the international competition for playwrights organized by the Romanian Ministry of Culture. Her successive stage adaptations of plays such as Kebab, DJ Pirate, All Those Guys Look Like Our Parents, Honey, Stop the Tempo, mady-baby.edu have been translated and put on in Germany, France, Ireland, Poland, England and Italy; they have also made their way to many European festivals (e.g. in Viesbaden, Bratislava, Toruń, Moscow, Paris). Without a doubt she owes her international career to the intransigence of her work, which, according to Iuli Popovici „strikes with no taboo whatsoever”. Instead of being biased, her theatre is a political theatre whose main target is the contemporary „polis” and its citizens. To express her criticism of the Romanian culture management system, Gianina Cărbunariu refuses to cooperate with Romanian public theatres.
