AUDIO.TR | Mykietyn. Theatre

Meeting with Paweł Mykietyn, a composer famous for his theater music, and the premiere of his new record published by TR Warszawa and Nowy Teatr - 7 February, 7.30 pm.

Paweł Mykietyn often points out that composing theater music and autonomous music — remaining outside of any utilitarian purposes and non-musical references — are completely different forms of art. “These are really two different things”, he says. “In the theater music is just one element. Sometimes more, sometimes less important. When, in turn, I’m writing an autonomous piece, then I know that for twenty minutes I have to keep the listener occupied with the sound only, without lights and costumes. This music is much more complex. That is why one works on a few measures for weeks, months even. In the theater music is not as intense, it shouldn’t be. Autonomous pieces do not work on stage because they are too thick. The actor feels that they create a competition”. However, in the case of Mykietyn’s music one could say that the actor gets a partner who — literally and metaphorically — plays in a precise way, with courage, sensitivity and deep breaths.

Mykietyn’s music provides a partner also for the listener. This music poses an intellectual, emotional and artistic challenge. It invites to a dialogue which is a fundamental issue for the theater.

The meeting with Paweł Mykietyn will be organised as part of AUDIO.TR - a cycle in TR Warszawa, led by Adam Suprynowicz - music critic.
